An Italian company focused on developing digital solutions for the healthcare sector to improve out-of-hospital emergency processes and remote telemonitoring. The company wanted to upgrade its emergency response application to run in an Android and cloud environment, with new features and integration with critical external systems

With its expertise in NoSQL and mobile application delivery, MOLO17 built, in concert with the client, an Android-based mobile solution that can run onboard any emergency vehicle (ambulance, helicopter) to record patient data, interventions performed, and critical vital signs and pre-align with the target hospital while keeping emergency services and dispatchers informed

Re-thinking medical emergency response for cloud and mobile delivery

Over 10 years ago, the client felt the need to redefine medical emergency response by simplifying communication between vehicles and hospitals. They, therefore, developed an initial solution using a Windows-based tablet and customized data synchronization based on the CouchDB key-value database. However, they encountered the following challenges:

Each new feature required significant re-writes with unpredictable costs. 

The technology stack did not tie together well to meet the business requirement of expanding to new customers

Precious domain-expert resources struggled to keep services alive, reducing time to focus on the main business

Adding new team members was inefficient because of lack of documentation on features and business requirements

Our client was looking for a solution that offered the best possible flow of communication between headquarters, EMS operators and hospital staff, providing accurate, detailed and real-time information. They required:
  • Integration with EMS vehicle on-board devices: monitors and ultrasound scanners
  • Real-time display of all information (also in graphic mode) collected in the field for the EMS dispatcher and for all hospital functions
  • Full functionality also offline (via Couchbase) for data collection


Improved performance and real-time data availability on multiple platforms

MOLO17 provided an IoT-enabled real-time data streaming solution capable of a fully-offline operational user experience that is contributing to life-saving emergency operations. Using Couchbase mobile technology, MOLO17 has brought a new paradigm to emergency medical management, enabling real-time communication, data security and integrity in a previously highly paper-dependent and error-prone environment.

The solution consists of

Android rugged tablet

A rugged touchscreen tablet is conveniently placed on board of EMS vehicles, and is able to collect and transmit data in real-time to hospitals

Offline-first mobile app

Installed on the tablet and integrated with medical devices present onboard the vehicles, e.g. defibrillator monitors (and in the future ultrasound scanners and more), it gives the possibility to create a “mission” (the digital equivalent of a real life intervention report) structured around the needs of the customer to be as user friendly as possible

Backoffice portal

Transmitted “mission” data is viewed in real time on a dedicated web portal, which displays its contents in a different way according to the permissions of the logged user
